The forklift is a material handling machine utilized to raise and transport loads from one location to another. Every component of a forklift has a specific function. Various components could be used to transport the load either horizontally or vertically.
Mast
The forklift mast refers to all the components which lift and lower the load. There are various types of masts for raising loads to different heights: simplex, duplex, triplex and quad.
Power Supply
Forklifts have four different ways of being powered: electric, gas, propane and diesel. The battery is situated in the cab underneath the seat. The propane tank is situated on the rear of the truck. The fuel tank on gas and diesel forklifts is under the back of the truck.
Cab
Located in the middle of the truck is the forklift cab. This is where the operator sits and accesses all the controls and informational gauges. The steering wheel, gas pedal, lifting controls, tilting controls and brake are all situated in the cab.
Frame
Carrying all the biggest forklift components is the frame of the truck. This includes the counterweights situated at the back that prevents the truck from tipping over when loaded. The frame consists of the overhead guard that protects the operator. The undercarriage holds the wheels, driveshaft and axles.
