Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and bigger refueling tanks must be stored in a different complex or building in order to be more secure. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity should have "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a secure enclosure which could only be accessible by authorized personnel. It is really essential for the safety of the operator, as well as everybody they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself has to be protected. This job can use retraining systems such as concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also important to always have a fire extinguisher present at the refueling station. Moreover, anyone who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also must be trained to effectively and safely operate the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a forklift should be correctly trained. This training includes a classroom portion as well as hands-on training. Once the training sessions have been finished, the person needs to be tested in order to show that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also includes the proper way of the refueling process of the lift truck. The training also includes site-specific procedures and the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving.
Medical Treatment
There should be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center located inside the facility where the lift truck is operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents which are used on site. This would also include the propane that is utilized to refuel the unit, along with the acid in the lift truck battery.
The MSDSs sheets are required to be available to all employees all the time. For instance, if an exposure incident occurs, the person has to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is required, to should be given without any delay. Normally, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is considered necessary, as a general rule; have a doctor examine the injury if you truly believe it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
