Getting Aboard the Lift truck
The 3-point dismount is one of the keys to keeping operators safe. It is the key factor for keeping operator's safety, even though this is usually ignored. For example, several years ago, at a lift truck rally, a contestant carried out the course perfectly at a forklift rally. At the end of his run, he was so thrilled, that he jumped off of his equipment and forgot to make a 3-point dismount. The judges ended up docking marks from his overall score and he didn't win the competition.
The importance of dismounting and mounting forklifts is a really serious factor to be included in training. Furthermore, having drivers wear their seatbelts could potentially save their lives in the event of a tip-over. It is necessary to understand that if a loaded lift truck's center of gravity moves outside of the stability triangle then a tip-over situation could occur. Trained drivers rarely ever run into a tip-over situation, however, it is very important that they are ready for that risk in case it happens.
Mount/Dismount
Mounting and dismounting of forklifts is vital for ensuring the driver stays safe. This is also true even on low platform pallet jacks. There are way too many injuries sustained from using these machinery. Some of the serious situations consist of: Driver's catching their loose clothing or coveralls when dismounting and can end up falling and wrenching their back. Sometimes, the operator can break or sprain an ankle when they step off of a lift truck. The driver could accidentally break an arm when falling and slipping off of the pallet jack. The operator can suffer from torn shoulder muscles if they slip on floor debris while they are still hanging onto the handhold with one hand.
Having 3 points of contact is essential when dismounting or mounting a lift truck in order to keep you safe. The 3 points can be obtained by 1 foot and 2 hands or by 2 feet and 1 hand. This stance is precisely like climbing down or up a ladder. Remember to face the machine at all times. Drivers usually tend to face away from the machinery or to jump or hop off the machinery and these mistakes really reduce the overall possibility of hurting themselves.
