Forklift Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to run electric lift trucks must be charged frequently and correctly maintained. Safety measures should always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is important for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area should be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the post should not be obstructed and an employee who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited near a charging area and battery. Do not permit items such as lighters or matches to be used when somebody is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging area well ventilated. The recharging process can release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
